2016: Mid-year Media Review

Lists!

TV

Favorite shows that aired in 2016:

This is a hard list to make, as I don’t think there have been any new shows that have premiered since January that I feel super strongly about? So this is going to be mostly either shows in the back-half of their season from 2015, or shows currently in their nth season that I love so much from their first (n-1) seasons that they make the list, even if the current season is not the best. Like, probably these were not the best seasons of Orphan Black and The 100, but both shows were still top-priority, must-watch-as-soon-as-reasonable-sleep-schedule-allows viewing, and that means something. But the specific ranking order should probably not be given too much weight:

  1. Penny Dreadful (season 3)
  2. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (season 1)
  3. Orphan Black (season 4)
  4. The 100 (season 3)
  5. iZombie (season 2)
  6. Fresh Meat (season 4)
  7. The Americans (season 4)
  8. Jane the Virgin (season 2)
  9. War and Peace
  10. Marvel’s Agent Carter (season 2)

Honorable mentions to:

  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, for remaining so fucking solid in its 11th (!) season
  • 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, for being super comforting existential crisis viewing (and also, man, Jon Richardson)
  • Preacher, which could work its way up to the favorites list by the end of the year, depending.

Also, hottest dudes on shows airing in 2016, just because we can:

  • Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders
  • Reid Scott as Dan Egan in Veep
  • Shazad Latif as Dr. Jekyll on Penny Dreadful
  • Harry Treadaway as Victor Frankenstein on Penny Dreadful
  • James Norton as Prince Andrei in War & Peace and Sidney Chambers in Grantchester but NOT as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley
  • Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager
  • Joe Gilgun as Cassidy on Preacher

Honorable mention to:

  • That Viking/punk-looking hacker dude on Orphan Black
