2018: Mid-year Media Review

I maybe haven’t consumed enough media so far this year to properly do this, but let’s give it a go:

TV

Favorite shows that aired in 2018:

  1. Killing Eve
  2. The Americans
  3. The Good Place
  4. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
  5. Jane the Virgin
  6. Taskmaster (UK)
  7. Travel Man
  8. Good Girls

Honorable mentions to:

  • Alone Together for being the most specifically millennial sitcom
  • Patrick Melrose for its dark comedy, stylistic flourishes, and absolutely killer use of Blur in the last episode
  • Schitt’s Creek, which I got way more invested in than I expected
  • The Break with Michelle Wolf–solid so far

Favorite other shows watched in 2018:

  1. I Love You, America
  2. Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope

Movies

Favorite movies that came out in 2018:

  1. The Death of Stalin
  2. Black Panther
  3. Thoroughbreds
  4. Oh Lucy!

Favorite non-2018 movies watched in 2018:

  1. Crossfire Hurricane (2012)
  2. …?

Books

Favorite books read in 2018 (fiction):

  1. The Idiot, Elif Batuman
  2. Mansfield Park, Jane Austen

Man, I needs to get better about picking out fiction for myself–I have read 13 fiction books so far this year, but one of them was a reread of Howards End, which I feel like should not be counted in this sort of list (as amazing and life-changing as it may have been) and the others…just did not evoke super strong positive emotions, I guess.

Favorite books read in 2018 (non-fiction):

  1. Feel Free: Essays, Zadie Smith
  2. My Musical Life, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
  3. Mauve Gloves & Madmen, Clutter & Vine, Tom Wolfe
  4. Kitchen Confidential, Anthony Bourdain
  5. The War against Cliché, Martin Amis
  6. Reading Myself and Others, Philip Roth

(If we’re being totally honest, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl belongs up there, because I fucking devoured it. But no, I can’t do it.)
